Hyde Family - The First Six Generations

The Hyde Family traces itself to the two brothers, Jonathan and Samuel, who were early settlers of Cambridge Village. Massachusetts. Samuel, born in 1610, embarked from London in the ship Jonathan in April 1639. Jonathan, born in 1626, arrived in the Massachusetts Bay colony in 1647, and with his brother purchased two hundred and forty acres in the village of Cambridge in 1652, which they owned in common until 1661.

Our ancestor, Nancy Hyde was descended from many of the Hyde family. Her parents, John and Abigail were first cousins, sharing Job and Prudence as grandparents. Job and Prudence were first cousins once removed. There are so many close relationships among all these Hydes, that it is difficult to comprehend them.

Jonathan and his first wife, Mary French had fourteen children. With his second wife, Mary Rediat, he had seven more children. Our ancestors are his children, Daniel, who was born in 1665 in Newton, married his first cousin once removed, Sarah Hyde in 1696, and died in 1736; and William, who was born in 1662, married his first cousin once removed, Elizabeth and died in 1699.

The first immigrant, Samuel, Hyde and his wife Temperance had five children. All of our Hyde relatives are descended from the son Job, born in Cambridge Village in 1643. Job married Elizabeth Fuller, and had nine children. We count Elizabeth, born August 29, 1664, Samuel, born March 5, 1667, and Sarah, born October 2, 1675 as our ancestors.

A great many of the Hydes and their relatives are buried in the Old Burying Ground in Newton, Middlesex, Massachusetts, on Centre Street, directly across from the Newton campus of Boston College. The oldest stone is for William Hides.

Among the other family stones in the Newton Old Burying Ground are the following:

One of the more unusual tombstones is a double stone in memory of a couple, Job and Prudence Hyde. In keeping with its later date, it has an angel instead of the death's head as its ornamentation.

There is also a footstone marked J. Hyde and P. Hyde.

Close to this tombstone are the stones for Prudence's parents, Lt. William Hide and Deliverance Hide Hide, who died one week apart in 1754.

Several other members of the Hyde family are buried in nearby Watertown, Massachusetts, in a very old cemetery located on Mount Auburn and Arlington Streets.

Ezra, the son of Job and Prudence Hyde of Newton, married Elizabeth Whiting of Sherborn in 1774, and moved later that same year to Winchendon, Worcester, Massachusetts. They had the following children: Ezra, Jr., who became the first town historian, Asa, John, Elizabeth, Prudence, Sally, Prudence, Sally and Job.

Job Hyde, another son of Job and Prudence Hyde of Newton, married Elizabeth Ward in 1779, and moved with his family to Winchendon in 1796. Job and his wife had the following children: Abigail, Elizabeth, Job, George W., Reuben, Lucretia, and Joel. Ezra's son, John, married Job's daughter, Abigail Hyde.

John and Abigail had four children: Abigail, Elisha, Eliza Ward, and Nancy, who is our ancestor.
