Letter from Eliza Otis to Her Daughter, Lillian Otis McPherron on the Birth of Her Daughter, Lillian Arrington McPherron

Los Angeles, March 3, 1891

Just a word with the dear little mother this morning, a word of sincerest congratulation. There has a new world opened to you - a new world of love and beauty, hasn’t there, Dear, with room enough in it for baby and “papa.” A woman doesn’t know all the depths of her own nature till the little ones come, and the love for the husband grows with love for the child. God bless you!

Lovingly Eliza A. Otis

Baby

A soft cloud lay on the mountain top,
White as a bed of lilies in bloom
I thought it was watching for me - was it not?
As I skate in and out of my room.
Strange little cloud! The gleam of an oar,
It seemed that I saw, then the spread of a wing,
Then out from the Somewhere overhead
Flashed the soul of a baby Seraphim.
