Moses Jewett was born on December 10, 1795 in Westport, Lincoln County, Maine, the son of James Jewett and Alice Cothren Jewett. He was a farmer and a fisherman. Westport is a small island that was connected to the mainland by a ferry. A bridge was built across the strait late in this century.

On February 17, 1820, Moses married Mary Nye Heagan, the daughter of Richard Heagan and Abigail Mahoney Heagan of Georgetown, Sagadahoc County. Mary, born on May 16, 1801, was only eighteen, when she married. The Jewetts had ten children: James Richard, named for his two grandfathers and born September 1, 1823; Louisa Maria, born January 7, 1826; Rebecca Heagan, born April 18, 1831; the twins, Andrew Jackson and George Washington, born February 11, 1832; Martin Van Buren, born November 18, 1833; Jacob Valentine, born February 5, 1836; Jane Mary (Jenny) born March 18, 1838; Ursula Ellen, born February 4, 1841; and Alonzo, born February 15, 1843.

Of these children, Martin, Ursula and Alonzo died as infants; Jacob died at three and Andrew died at fifteen. James and George married two of the Greenleaf sisters: Emeline and Anna Maria; Louisa married Jeremiah L. Stevens; Rebecca married Jonathan May Garland; and Jenny married twice, James J. Plaisted and William H. Mitchell.

The Jewett house is still standing in Westport, and is occupied by Teresa Richardson who also cares for the Jewett Cemetery situated nearby. Moses died May 2, 1869, and Mary moved to Bristol, Rhode Island to live with her son George Jewett and his wife, Anna Maria. She died ten years later on April 24, 1879. They are both buried in the Jewett Cemetery with his parents and many of their descendants.
