My great-great grandfather, Jonathan Garland was born March 15, 1796 in Parsonsfield, York County, Maine, the second son of Samuel and Molly (Batchelder) Garland. There were ten children in the family, all of whom lived to adulthood. There are pictures of four of the brothers probably taken about the time of the Civil War.

Jonathan moved to Winslow, Maine, just across the Kennebec river from Waterville. He and two of his brothers, David (1794-1885) and Thomas (1800-1864) lived on contiguous farms on Garland Road.

Edmund (1799-1886) graduated from Dartmouth College, became a Congregational Minister and moved to Granville, Ohio; Joseph (1811-1883) graduated from both Bowdoin College, and Bangor Seminary and also became a Congregational minister.

Jonathan married Olive Johnson, the daughter of Thomas Ayer Johnson and Hannah Barker Johnson, who had grown up in the neighboring town of Cornish, Maine. They had seven sons, five of whom grew to adulthood: Edward Francis Garland (1824), Thomas Ayer Johnson Garland (1826), Lorenzo Barker Garland (1828), Jonathan May Garland (1835), and Erastus P. Garland (1838).

Jonathan worked as a joiner, a type of carpenter, as well as a farmer, and was a member of the Congregational church. His son, Jonathan May was named for William May, who served as the first pastor of the church from its founding in 1828 until 1832. Jonathan's wife, Olive Johnson Garland died April 20, 1850 and Jonathan married Ann Southern. He died October 31, 1873 and is buried with his two wives at the Drummond Cemetery in Winslow.
