Dedication

To the memory of my father, John Jewett Garland, who started me on this search. Twenty nine years ago he handed me a collection of papers and charts and suggested that I see what I could do with them His brother, William Marshall Garland, had done a small family tree on both of my parents' families, using what was then available at the Genealogical Room at the Los Angeles Public Library. With that beginning I became a enthusiastic genealogist.

Jack's curiosity and his enthusiasm for his family were infectious, and I was an eager disciple. As I have gone through the albums and the voluminous files that he collected, I have often thought that he intended to do something like what I have done. He had obviously spent many hours putting names and dates on old photographs, and writing down his memories of the family and those of his parents. I am sure he would be pleased with the final result.
