Emma Jane Little was born on May 29, 1844 in Lisbon, Grafton County, New Hampshire, the second child and only daughter of the five children born to Kimball Little and Elvira Currier Little. At the age of eighteen, on August 27, 1862, she married Moses Knight Chandler who was seven years her senior.

Emma wrote a poem to Clara on her fifty eighth birthday, telling of the joy at her arrival. Emma was ninety years old when she wrote these lines. It tells the story of their trip to California, and expresses Emma's very deep religious convictions.

Emma wrote two books, The World's Only Hope, The Bible Hope in 1925, and Bible Stories in 1932. She kept up a voluminous correspondence and filled notebooks with a daily journal and with poetry, up until her final illness and death on April 7, 1937 at the age of ninety two.
