Name Variation Thomas Hagan (RevWar Patriot) was also known as Thomas Higon (husbandman-farmer).
Name Variation Thomas Hagan (RevWar Patriot) was also known as Thomas Higgins (husbandman-farmer).
Name Variation Thomas Hagan (RevWar Patriot) was also known as Thomas Heagan (husbandman-farmer).
CAUTION*There is the following CAUTIONARY INFORMATION for Thomas Hagan (RevWar Patriot) and Thomas Hogan (blacksmith): Note there are two different people, ours being a husbandman (farmer) the other a blacksmith. Though it's possible this is the son of our Thomas, he (Jr) is barely of age and died in Prospect versus Arrowsic Island where the blacksmith owned land.
CAUTION*There is the following CAUTIONARY INFORMATION for Tilly Higgins and Thomas Hagan (RevWar Patriot): Looking at the birth years of Tilly's children, and the birth year of our ancestor Thomas, it seems very unlikely that Tilly is the father of Thomas.
Negative*Negative searches: No record of Hagans in History of Cumberland County Maine. Nor was anything positive found in Biographical Review of Cumberland County Main, History of York Maine, or the 6 volumes of Province and Court Records of Maine.1
CAUTION*There is the following CAUTIONARY INFORMATION for Thomas Hagan (RevWar Patriot): "Thomas Hagan may have been the immigrant himself. He may be the son of the immigrant. We propose searching the records of York county ME and Rockingham NH for Thomas to see if he was associated with other contemporary Hagans. ... since Thomas appears in Lincoln county the same year the county was divided from York, the chances are excellent that more details of his career can be gleaned from York county records."
Next report says "Although documentary evidence is lacking, we now feel that Thomas is the son of Forgus Hagan, an Irish immigrant who appeared in Essex county MA in the 1730s and later removed to Scarborough ME."
KRB - Though we also have a candidate father John Higgins of York ME, I think Forgus is more likely. Thomas' estimated birth year of 1730 would not fit in with the known birthdates of John's children unless he was a twin. Since John's children's dates (per their source) come from York Records, it is unlikely they would have recorded one twin and not the other. For the time being, I'll leave John as a candidate, but will continue to pursue Forgus as the more likely candidate.1,2
Birth*circa 1730 He was born circa 1730 at
He was the son of Forgus Hagan and Sarah (__________)
CAUTION*There is the following CAUTIONARY INFORMATION for Forgus Hagan and Thomas Hagan (RevWar Patriot): In summary, it seems most probable that Thomas Hagan of Georgetown was the son of Forgus Hagan of Scarborough. Forgus was definitely a Hagan - not Higgins as he has been designated by some writters. Of the few men of his name, he is the only one that cannot be eliminated. The will of Tilly Haggens of Berwick shows no son Thomas. Forgus was the right age to have been Thomas's father. Finally, Scarborough is quite close to Georgetown.
The records of this area have been exhausted (this was in 1986). It is not likely that Thomas Hagan's parentage can be absolutely documented, but we feel that the evidence makes Forgus Hagan a strong possibility.1
