Story*[John Note] Jewett Family of America 1999 Quarterly #2 page 34 has this article titled
"Correction to Cluster 645".
In Volume III, p. 154, of the History and Genealogy of the Jewetts of America,
James Jewett (10207) was linked to James Jewett (645). Information was given that
James Jewett (645) married Mary Pearson (638), the daughter of Lt. Stephen and
Hannah (Jewett) Pearson (217), and that they had a son James Jewett (10207).
However, research done by Gordon L. Remington*1*, reveals that James Jewett
(10207) was the illegitimate son of James Jewett (645) and his first cousin Mary
Pearson (638). Volume III states that James Jewett (10207) fathered the child
and that James married Mary Pearson. However, no evidence of a marriage can be
found. In fact, James was baptized in September of 1740 as "Pearson."*2* Mary
Pearson had another illegitimate child in 1743, Ruth Duty Pearson*3*. In 1754
James Jewett (10207) chose Stephen Pearson (his grandfather) as his guardian.
Additional evidence is presented by Mr. Remington which reveals that James
Jewett (10208) was the child of James Jewett's (10207) second wife and not his
first wife as stated in Volume III. James (10207) and Alice were married 16
Oct 1789 as "Capt Jewett" and "Elienor Cochran."*4* The divorce petition dated
29 Apr 1789 from his first wife Elizabeth (Shepard) Jewett mentions that "James
has begotten three bastard children." The three children born prior to 1789 were
James (10208) born 18 Dec 1783, Mary (10209) born 6 Aug 1785 and Hannah (10210)
born 25 Apr 1787. A fourth child, Ruth Riggs (10211) born 26 Mar 1790, was not
born until after the date of the divorce petition; so the three "bastard" children
have to be James, Mary and Hannah.
