There is quite a bit of history in this publication, and has long lists
of sources that were used. The following paragraph is quoted from this publication
which also goes on in detail to show why she concludes that John is the granson
of Governor Dudley.
"It is now time to mention the fact that a great mystery surrounds the
identity of Mercy Dudley's father, the man named John Dudley. Dorothy Mae
Johns, a descendant, has given ten years to researching this matter. She has
read as many books as she could find on The Dudley Family and has corresponded
with many, many people who have been trying to unravel the mystery also, but
who, as yet, have not been able to find out whi this John Dudley really was. Putting
all of the facts together that she has been able to aquire, the compiler has
come to believe that this John Dudley was the long-lost grandson of Governor
Thomas dudley of Massachusetts who held that office in 1634, 1640, 1656, and
1650 as well as being Deputy Governor in the intervening years in 1629, 1637, 1646, and 1651."
