| MovedTo | circa 1752 | He moved circa 1752 to North Carolina Alexander 1, with his family, moved from Pennsylvania and settled in the western part of Rowan County, North Carolina, probably as early as 1752... From Court House records in Iredell County, North Carolina, we find deeds, transfers, and records showing that both James and William McHargue owned land on the South Rocky Creek which borders McHargue Mountain. This leads us to believe that Alexander McHargue settled on the elevation bordered by Rocky Creek in Rowan County, the western part of which later became Iredell County. He and his family lived here long enough for the elevation to be designated as McHargue Mountain. And, even though we found no land deeds for Alexander himself, or marriage records for his sons (records for that particular time were missing from Court House records as Iredell Co. Court House burned in 1854), it is probable that he left each son a tract of land in this area. We feel certain Alexander remained in North Carolina during the lifetime of his first wife, as his three sons, James, John and William married and established homes near each other in Rowan County, North Carolina, and here Mary made her home with one of her brothers, as we find recorded in her father's will. (Rowan County, North Carolina, became a part of Iredell County in 1788).1 |
