| Story* | [Johannes Note] John Francis inherited his father's plantation. He was an outspoken Loyalist during the Revolution. As a result, all of these lands were confiscated by the state of New Jersey and he and his family were obliged to flee to Nova Scotia. He returned in 1789 and settled at what is now Long Island City NY while his son Francis remained in Anapolis. His son George also returned to the states with his wife, Elizabeth Ellis. After being confiscated by the state, the old Ryerson homestead passed through several hands before it came into possession of Richard DeGray, the sone of Helena Ryerson and Johannis DeGray, who enlarged the house by adding a large wing on the east end. It was occupied by DeGray descendants up until 1966 when Minnie DeGray died at 93. In 1970, the house and one acre of land were purchased by the owners of Scordatos Restaurant. | |
