Story*[Charles Note] Letter from Florence Ferris, daughter of Martha Bullis Ferris, to
Martha Bullis Boutelle, dated 1 Apr 1937 gives information about the Charles Bullis'
homestead:.
[Bought lots in Hampshire grants in Manchester] In 1809, Charles Bullis deeded
this to his son Henry, and the deed was also signed by wife Elizabeth. It was the
only one of several deeds she signed, indicating it was the homestead. In 1825, Henry
deeded the same property to his daughter Elizabeth, and her husband John Slocum, and
it remained in the Slocum family for at least 75 years. If anyone inquired for the
Bullis home, he would not be told of this because the name has been Slocum for
so long. Florence Ferris tracked the location by talking with someone working on
the early history of the town.
"The house is on the original road running up from Bennington, the one by
which the early settlers came up from Amenia NY. The present main highway was not laid
out until 1812. There is said to be a never-failing spring on the place. The house
stands back from the road, is two stories, with the stairs in the center of the
house. On one side were two rooms, the rear one being the bedroom, mentioned in
the big fireplace. It was taken out some years ago. It was, of course, one of those
used for cooking. The woman there said that when this was used for a dining room, a
small kitchen was built on and that the only other change was to make the stairway
an open one by removing the partition between the stairs and this kitchen. I do
no know if she is right. The floors of the house have very wide boards, the original
ones I believe; but the doors and windows look modern. The cellar wall is of
interest. The stones are very large and have been left round, apparently taken
from the farm. The wall is not exactly perpendicular insdie as they did not cut or dress
up such stones; but it is very thick and solid and looks as if it would last
another 170 years. I am of the opinion this was the first home of Charles Bullis,
therefore dating back to 1765 or 1766. He would not go to the trouble of building
two such foundations. An old lilac bush in the yard is 200 years old, the woman said. This
may not be exact as there were no homes there then, but it may have been planted
by our great, great grandmother".

NoteOne of the town histories reports that cemetery was in poor shape after being used for a parade ground duing War of 1812, thus no stones as old as 1809.
NoteBlacksmith. Charles and son Henry were among the 24 men who organized the Zion Episcopal Church in Factory Point (now Manchester Center) in 1782 per Gazeteer cited in sources.
