| CAUTION* | There is the following CAUTIONARY INFORMATION for Eleazer Quimby (RevWar Patriot): Under consideration: Genealogical History of the Quinby (Quimby) Family (SLC 1035783 #9) shows Eleazer (the elder) the proposed father of Eleazer (the younger). It is the basis for the families we are studying. Important analysis - Note that we cannot determine whether they are father/son on the basis of probate records; nor by deeds prior to 1771. Nor does the younger ever appear in Rockingham or Hillsborough Co Deeds after 1771; as he might have, had one of Eleazer the elder's presumptive children been quit-claimed to, vis-a-vis their father's estate, by the rest) If the younger IS a son of the elder, we might expect to find his birth or baptism in Hampton Falls NH records, or those of towns very nearby. We know now that the elder was both baptized at, and died of, Hampton Falls; it is reasonable to assume that he passed his whole life there, especially as he appears nowhere else. (He shows up just once, see his record). Although the Town Records tell us nothing of his marriage - though we know he had one - or children (whose existence is, a priori, probable) - the church records might help. Our transcript goes only to about 1754, and so falls short. George Sanborn, my colleague, says the original church records for that town, which he believes do go past 1754, are inaccessible at Harvard's Baker Library - it is hard to get into any Harvard library, even as a graduate, and , says George, Baker is particularly unsympathetic to genealogists - and available (save for our transcript, which he doesn't trust) nowhere else. (not filmed by LDS). Note too, as a very minor point, that Eleazer the younger named his first daugher Abigail, which was the name of Eleazer the elder's widow. Clearly, the family passed through Chester; which, in 1763 and '4, 'hived off' Raymond and Candia. Having spent ten years trying (unsuccessfully) to solve a 'Clifford' problem of surprisingly similar nature - the 'candidates' are half dozen brothers, out of Kingston, who removed to Candia and Raymond in the 1760s - I can say with some authority that the town, and most other, records are quite unsatisfactory, and the client is not likely to get much further out of them. Question raised and answered - What is the evidence that the Eleazer Quimby (the younger) who married at Salisbury in 1785 is the same E.Q. who fought from Candia in 1777-80? Do we know this for a fact? Unless it can be shown that E.Q. of Candia = E.Q. of Salisbury, it would seem at least reasonable to suppose that he was was a native of the latter town, because Eleazer the elder is not the first bearer of the name in the Q family; Robert (3) had a brother of that name, born in Salisbury MA on 13 May 1691. This Eleazer had, also, a brother Jeremiah, born in 1689; among the latter's sons - per the Q book, were Moses, Jacob, and Tristram Q ... who appear, at first glance, to be the men of those names who show up at Salisbury NH from its earliest days, according to the Index to NH Town Records. All three were born in the 1720s and '30s. [It was asked if we have shown that Eleazer of Salisbury is not son of one of those three and named after their brother?] Answer: Jeremiah's male children/grandchildren are shown in Q book. Though it would be possible that those men had further children, it seems logical that if there were more males mentioned it records, they would have been put in the book. Besides: The report continues - However: further review of the client's notes, and of the Candia NH town records, shows that the latter twice recorded Eleazer Q's death (in 1808): at 2:193, "in Springfield;" at 2:420, "in Plainfield." Since there would seem little reason for Candia to record his death, all the way across the state, unless the descedant had once been of, or somehow closely connected with Candia itself, this seems fairly good evidence that E.Q. of Plainfield = E.Q. of Salsibury = E.Q. of Candia.1 | |
