Source*Source(s): Genealogies of Woodstock Families, section on Bowen Family gives the following sources: "Lineage of the Bowens of Woodstock, Connecticut" by Edward Augustus Bowen (Cambridge MA, 1897); "The Family of Griffith Bowen" by Daniel Bowen (Jacksonville FL, 1893); W.V.R. and graveyard inscriptions; "Bowen Ancestry" by Edward A Bowen (NEHGS Register Vol. 47:453); "Griffith Bowen of Boston" by Edward A Bowen (NEHGS Register Vol. 47, Oct 1893, pages 453-459); "The will of Griffith Bowen of parish of Berynaber, Diocese of Exon, communicated by Lieut. Col. E.R. Cottingham, Ballyhaiss, Roxeth Hill, Harrow, Eng; Cf. Brookline Hist. Soc. No. 5, 1923, pages 13 & 21.
The house of Griffith Bowen at Buryhead as well as the Mansion House in 1557 of his great-grandfather Griffith ap Owen in Oxwich, in the Gower Peninsula, Wales, are still standing. Griffith came to Boston with his family in 1638. He and his wife joined the First Church of Boston. Near his home lot in Boston at the corder of what are now Essex and Washington streets stood the historic "Liberty tree" said to have been planted in 1646 by Griffith Bowen and cut down by Tories in 1775. Genealogies of Woodstock Families has a picture of the tree, and has the footnote that Rev. Daniel Bowen in Bowen Genealogy says the tree stood across the street and there is no proof he planted it. With Peter Oliver in 1649 Griffith was chosen to do survey work at Muddy River, but he returned to England where he died. Power of administration for his estate was granted 17 Apr 1676 to his son Henry. Griffith's 150 acres in Brookline were divided among his children.
Lineage of the Bowens of Woodstock, Connecticut gives the pedigree of Griffith Bowen back to Bell Mawr, King of Britain 55 B.C. with the following statement: " I hereby certify that the foregoing Pedigree of Griffith Bowen of Barryheard, County Glamorgan is a true copy of the Pedigree as it appears in volume 8 of the Protheroe Collections, deposited in the College of Arms, London, with additions from Vincent's Collections." by Alfred Scott Gatty, York Herald, dated 29 Jul 1891 College of Arms, London. The coat of arms is also pictured.1,2

Various sources say that Griffith Bowen was "formerly of Barryhead, parish of Llangenydd, co. Glmamorgan" Llangenydd is the Welsh version of Llangennith. http://www.the-gower.com/home/interactive.htm map of the Gower Peninsula in Glamorgan(shire) Wales, shows the location of Llangennith which would be what is meant by "Langwith" and "Langenith" quoted in Ancestral Roots of Sixty Colonists by Frederick Weis. It's easy to "hear" how the corruption of Llangennith might have sounded like Langenith. "Barryhead" would be the head of the Burry River, to the west and north. For more maps, and places where Bowens resided, see http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~bowen/placesnamed.html.3,5
