(Witness) NegativeNegative searches: No record of Hagans in History of Cumberland County Maine. Nor was anything positive found in Biographical Review of Cumberland County Main, History of York Maine, or the 6 volumes of Province and Court Records of Maine.1

Birth* At Ireland probably 1700-1710.1
He was the son of (__________) Hagan
Source*Source(s): that they are brothers - Oldest citation (1853) says "Fergus Higgins came from Ireland to Black Point about 1750. Tully Higgins, his brother, came over with him and settled in Berwick." Next oldest (1895) says "Tilly Higgins came from Ireland and sat down in Berwick; his brother Fergus settled in Scarborough." Stott (in Lineages Report) says "Our own investigation shows that while Tilly was generally called Higgins, Forgus was almost always called Haggen, Hagen, Hoggens, etc."2,3,1
Marriage*Forgus Hagan married Sarah (__________) her name of Sarah per 1769 deed.
CAUTION*There is the following CAUTIONARY INFORMATION for Forgus Hagan and Thomas Hagan (RevWar Patriot): In summary, it seems most probable that Thomas Hagan of Georgetown was the son of Forgus Hagan of Scarborough. Forgus was definitely a Hagan - not Higgins as he has been designated by some writters. Of the few men of his name, he is the only one that cannot be eliminated. The will of Tilly Haggens of Berwick shows no son Thomas. Forgus was the right age to have been Thomas's father. Finally, Scarborough is quite close to Georgetown.
The records of this area have been exhausted (this was in 1986). It is not likely that Thomas Hagan's parentage can be absolutely documented, but we feel that the evidence makes Forgus Hagan a strong possibility.1
Deed1734 Forgus Hagan was the GrantEE 1734 "of" Haverhill, Essex Co., Massachusetts: when he bought land in Falmouth (now Portland), Cumberland Co. ME. Forgus briefly removed to Falmouth in 1734 but returned to Haverhill by 1737. He was a trader and may have moved around with his work.1
Note*Other Higgins deeds in York county refer to the Higgins family of Cape Cod who were granted lands in Maine for service during Kin Philip's War. In 1736 and 1739, two of Jedediah Higgins' nephews sold their uncle's grants in Gorham, then called "7th Township". A Philp Higgins of Georgetown bought 153 acres of land in Georgetown. Later research shows that Philip was from the Cape Cod Higgins.1
Deed1737 He was the GrantEE 1737 "of" Haverhill, Essex Co., Massachusetts: when he bought land in Berwick (York Co. Maine) where his brother Tilly resided.1
Deed*10 February 1737/38 He was the GrantOR 10 February 1737/38 Haverhill, Essex Co., Massachusetts: when he sold a lot in Berwich Township, York Co., MA to William Forst of Dover NH. Forgus was a trader. (by the way, most all documents spell it Forgus, not Fergus).1
Immigration*circa 1740He and Tilly Higgins immigrated circa 1740 thought to have come from County Tyrone Ireland.4
Occupation*1744Forgus Hagan was an inn-holder in 1744 at Scarborough, Cumberland Co., Maine.1
Deedbetween 1744 and 1749 He was the GrantEE between 1744 and 1749 Scarborough, Cumberland Co., Maine: purchased nine tracts of land totalling about 250 acres. He was usually seen as an inn-holder. Most of the lands were in the southeast part of Scarborough along the Libby and Nonesuch rivers.1
Occupation1745He was an assessor in 1745.1
Occupation1752He was a selectman in 1752.1
Deedbetween 1752 and 1756 He was the GrantOR between 1752 and 1756: York county deeds also show that he began to dispose of some of his land in 1752 and 1756.1
Negative*Negative searches: Above are the earliest records found for Forgus. An examination of Essex county MA deed indexes showed nothing for him.1
Occupation1764He was a constable in 1764.
Deed7 March 1769 Forgus Hagan and Sarah (__________) was the GrantOR 7 March 1769 Scarborough, Cumberland Co., Maine: Forgus Hagans (sic) is of Scarborough, and a yeoman and sells to William Thompson also of Scarborough, esq.1
