| Story* | [George Note] Lineages (L49) quote: Naturalization index cards of the US District Court of MA were checked for an entry for George Smith, finidng no match for the ancestor. However, an entry for George Smith of Lawrence was found in an index to New England naturalization petitions(SLC 1429780). It stated that he was born in England on 20 Apr 1821, and was naturalized 10 Mar 1873 in the Superior Court of Essex County, MA. Unfortunately, the actual records are not in the Family History Library. A letter has been prepared to be sent to the Boston Branch of the National Archives, where the records are deposited, requesting a copy of George Smith's naturalization record. Interestingly enough, in the index Lineages provided, there is also a George E Smith of Lawrence, born England 15 Dec 1855, naturalized 13 Oct 1882. That record is #37-381 in Superior Court of Essex Co in Salem MA. (Our George's #157-226). Who is he, and is he related? Especially to the infant George E Smith buried with our George's wife Grace?. Meline Lutz Sanborn did some searching (18 Apr 2003) for George and gave us this:. "Enclosed are photocopies of the original petition and naturalization declaration for George Smith. They come to us courtesy of the Judicial Archivist of Massachusetts, Libby Bouvier, who was kind enough to check to see if there were any additional documents beyond the copies available at the National Archives branch in Waltham". "Also enclosed are photocopies from the microfilm of Boston port passenger lists. George Smith, aged 31 years, laborer, born in Ireland, last resided in Ireland, came to Boston 13 June 1856, on the S.S. Tirell, last out of Liverpool, with his wife, Grace, aged 31, and three children, May A., aged 5, Edwards aged 1, and James Wittaker, aged 2". "There are 366 George Smiths in the new index being compiled by volunteers under the direction of Archives staff member Janice Duffy. The same Georges seen by your SLC crew, appeared in the new index. All the Smiths have been done (the index is almost complete, and was originally sorted by surname on 3x5 cards)". "The passenger lists are arranged by date. I enclose the pages showing arrivals on 2 June 1856. Note the sole entry for the ship Hemisphere out of Maitland, Capt. Crow, for a Rebecca Smith, spinster. Regrettably, much of the entry is illegible". "I am assuming that the George Smith on the Tirrell is no your man, since he misses the age by five years and the arrival date by 11". "Since he said he was of Bradford, England, in his declaration, perhaps he would show up ther in the English census of 1851". | |
