| Military* | circa 1813 | Captain William Griffith Jr was in the military: circa 1813 In the war of 1812, ... my father attached himself, as a volunteer, to the spies, commanded by Capt. Wm. Griffith, my mother's eldest brother, a brave, and gallant officer. ... My uncle, Capt. Wm. Griffith, was in the massacre at Chicago, in August 1812, where Capt. Wells, and nearly the entire command, of two or three companies of infantry, were overpowered and nearly all massacred ... They showed no quarters, except to a very few, whom they made prisoners. Capt. Griffith was among the latter, though he had fought gallantly during the whole fight. He was believed, by the Indians, to be a Frenchman - for he spoke the Canadian French language - and on this account his life was spared. [there is more not quoted]1 |
