| CAUTION* | There is the following CAUTIONARY INFORMATION for Abigail Prentice or Blanchard: Some places (like a few on Ancestry) have the name of Blanchard without sources. Most places have Prentice. In doing further research, I found NEHGS Register entry in Jan 1941 (Vol 95 pg 80) which gives information on a Charles Griffin Stratton (b.1857) who was elected a life member. In the blurb on his ancestry it shows John (1661-1717/18) "... whose wife was Abigail (Prentice?)". Further work needs doing on her to find out about her background, and confirm the surname of Prentice, thus eliminating the question mark. Maybe Blanchard was a previous marriage? Researcher Bud Carlson says that no researcher has been able to find an Abigail Prentice woman that ties into any family with surname Prentice in old New England history. There is also an unsourced query showing her as a Blanchard - http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/blanchard/1997-08/0872512414 With that clue, I found this Ancestry World Tree entry with sources: http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=dickdutton&id=I97331 This AWT entry has the source connecting her to John Stratton as her tombstone and Watertown Records/Town Proceedings by Fred G Barker 1894 published by the Historical Society. However, her tombstone says she died 25 Oct 1732 in her 66th year of age which would put her born 1666, two years before Abigail Blanchard. And the Watertown records only say that Abigail is the wife of John Stratton (when she joined church), but does not give her maiden name. So we still need something to prove that Abigail Blanchard was the person who married John Sutton, or something to show that she was a Prentice instead. The NEHGS Register 60:373 (1906) article is titled Blanchard Family Records and starts out "The following items were copied by ... from and old manuscript book, once the property of Abel Blanchard of Andover, Mass., now at the Bible Society, Astor Place, New York City. The book was evidently commenced by the first Samuel Blanchard, of Andover, Mass., and continued by members of the family. The pertinant parts are "Samuel Blanchard was married to hes wif Mary in the year 1654 upon the 3 day of jenury" and "My daughtar Abigal was boren upon the 5 day of March 1668". The NEGHS Register 26:253 (1872) has the baptismal records of Charlestown MA (Suffolk Co.) and shows 4 Blanchard children of "our brother Blanchard", including an Abigail, baptised 1681-11-29. On the previous page there are 3 others baptised 1681-7-25, children of Samuel Blanchard & wife. Researcher Bud Carlson says: The Book of Strattons, written 1908-1918 has Abigail's maiden name as "(Prentice?)". I suspect that your [NEHGS 1941] source used Stratton genealogy data from the Book of Strattons which traces over 2000 Strattons from New England, Long Island, New Jersey and Virginia as original points of immigration through 250 years of successive generations in this country. He goes on to say: As far as a two year difference in birth years between A. Blanchrd and A. Prentice, it is not unlikely that errors can be made even by a stone mason carving tombstones or town written records, etc. I'll inquire of a fellow running a Blanchard web site and see what proof he can offer that Abigail Blanchard was married to John Stratton. Also, 10 miles doesn't seem like a lot of distance for a horse/wagon to travel to meet a potential spouse after all their ancestors came thousands of miles across the seas! Maybe a traveling minister introduced them or their father's conducted some kind of business between themselves, resulting in an introduction or arrangement? | |
