Pedigree for Guilford Carlile Babcock Jr
Father* Arnold Belcher b. c 1715
Mother* Elizabeth Champlin b. 10 Jan 1719
Birth* Babcock Genealogy gives Sylvia's father as John, but nothing has ever been found to support that, and there are things to support Arnold being her father.
Belcher book says that Sylvestre and Elizabeth are "probable" children of Arnold.
Tretheway says "an exhaustive search in the probate and land records of Washington and Newport counties was made and no mention found of a John Belcher; there is reason to believe that the Babcock Genealogy is in error stating that Sylvia Babcock was the daughter of John Belcher." Tretheway goes on to say "A Champlin manuscript in the Newport Historical Society, compiled by Henry Denison Camplin, contains the following": (then summarized some Champlin info with the note that "the following were probably their children" and listing Sylvia and Elizabeth).
NEHGS Register also says "the following children were probably theirs."1,2,3,4
She was the daughter of Arnold Belcher and Elizabeth Champlin
Story*Though she was commonly called Sylvia (Scilva in husband's will), She is called Silvester in her marriage record, Sylvestre in some Rhode Island printed records, and Silvester in the acceptance of the administration of her husband's will. Silvester is certainly an unusual name for a woman. For whom was she named? The answer is probably her paternal grandmother's sibling (whose sex is not on the birth record).2
Marriage*2 July 1761Sylvia Belcher married Oliver Babcock (RevWar Patriot), son of Stephen Babcock and Anna/Hannah Thompson, on 2 July 1761 at Westerly, Washington Co., Rhode Island, per Tretheway who cites book 2 pg 442 of the original manuscript records in the office of the Westerly Town Clerk - "July ye 2d Day 1761. Then Oliver Babcock & Silvester Belcher, both of Westerly in Kings County were Lawfully Joined Together in Marriage by me Joseph Crandal, Justice Peace."

VR of RI says: "3-77 Belcher, Silvestre, and Oliver Babcock, July 2, 1761."1,2,5
